Good Hair Days

For the the better part of my teens and twenties, I was at war with my hair.  There was no such thing as a good hair day… unless I got a blow out or used a curling iron to tame my natural waves.  I could show you horrific photos from high school (two words:  frizzy bangs) but we’re going to skip that today.  All you really know is that I’ve put my hair through torture over the past ten, fifteen years.  Flat ironing, blow drying, trying every gel / shine serum / mousse / styling cream under the sun.  Today I’m here to tell you one thing.  The less you do to your hair, the better.  The less you wash it, the less you touch it, the better your hair is going to look.  These days I am washing my hair two-three times a week and have narrowed my hair routine down to two simple products.  Good hair is possible, with barely any work.

Repeat after me.  Simple is better.  Then read on for the step by step.

  1. I start out by shampooing with Paul Mitchell’s Spring Loaded Detangling Shampoo.  I love this product because it’s super super gentle.  My hair errs ont he dryer side but this one totally detangles (without breakage) and hydrates my hair (yet still cleanses.)  It’s sulfate free, so it cleanses gently without roughing up the cuticle of the hair.
  2. When I get out of the shower, I gently towel dry my hair.  Usually I put it up in a towel while I put o body lotion and makeup… and then after I get dressed I take it out of the towel and run a wide-tooth comb through it.  I smooth on about two quarters worth of Paul Mitchell Ultimate Wave, working it from the ears down through the roots.  This product is one of my favorites as it creates beachy, textured waves without any frizz.
  3. After that, I don’t touch it.  Not a bit.  The less I touch it, the better it looks.
  4. I do this a couple times a week.  In between, I tie my hair up in a bun at night and in the shower, and it looks even better the next day.  A little bit messy and tousled.  That’s it.  Like I said, the simpler, the better.  The less I do to my hair, the better it looks.
Be sure to visit Paul Mitchell’s Facebook page for more curly girl confessions (and to share your own #curlconfession) and find a salon where you can now purchase the products.

My hair is only slightly more wavy than yours, and I totally agree on the less is more!…especially when it comes to drying. Unless my hair will freeze or I’m in a huge rush, I always let it air dry.

Same. I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to learn such a valuable lesson! :)

You are so pretty Grace! Love your hair. I can’t imagine what the humidity out there must do, but it looks great!

I wish I was better at just leaving my hair alone.  I too had awful hair for most of middle and high school — the flat iron was my saving grace!  But now, I need to lay off the heat – big time!

You can do it! Lots of conditioner, a good cut, and then just let it be! :)

ugh. i have straightened my hair my whole life and i need to figure out how to wear it curly b/c this routine is not sustainable! but, i HATE wet hair, so this will be tough. excited to try the ultimate wave b/c i love that your curls are still soft! do you also use conditioner?!

It’s def not sustainable. I love nothing more than a good blow-out, but it’s so much work! For this particular look I did not use conditioner, but that’s because the shampoo is so gentle. Usually I am a conditioner addict!!!

You and I could be hair twins…same color, length, texture AND same routine pretty much!  The only thing I do different is use WEN cleansing conditioner and no product at all, just towel dry with my Twistee hair towel and thats it!!  Sometimes I use a tiny bit of Orofluido Jasmine Oil.

Oh yay for being hair twins! I need to look up WEN, haven’t heard of them but love learning about new products.

I agree, the simpler the better! I used to leave my hair alone, but then I got bored and cut a fringe and then I had to style it. Wrong move!

The day I learned to stop fighting the natural wave of my hair was the day I suddenly looked a whole lot better in pictures. Mine is sort of straight/wavy and looks similar to yours when it air dries. I’ll have to try out these Paul Mitchell products – always on the hunt for “the holy grail” wave tamer.

I so agree with you! It made my life so much easier and looks so much better. You should def try the PM products… I also really love the leave in conditioner for frizz fighting! :)

Definitely agree, simple is better for curls! I almost never use heated tools on my hair — it just works so much better when I air-dry. Will definitely have to try out the Paul Mitchell! I always switch to something new when I run out of something.
