craft supplies

The Top 10 Resources for DIY + Craft Supplies

So many of you have asked me where the best places are to get crafting supplies.  I probably purchase about 90% of my supplies online, simply because my weekend travel schedule has been a little bit crazy – and by the time I leave work, most of the stores I love are closed.  That said, nothing beats the Garden District or New York Beads and M&J Trimming in Manhattan.  In the meantime, I thought I would give you my top 10 online destinations for crafting supplies!  They’re in alphabetical order.  (I always love learning about great new places to shop for supplies – so please tell me your faves in the comments!)

1.  Amazon.com  Believe it or not, I buy the majority of my supplies here.  I have a subscription to Amazon Prime, which paid for itself in two months of joining.  $80 a year for free next day shipping?  Amazing.  They have such a huge range of products + supplies… it’s incredible.

2.  Beadaholique  Beadaholique offers a huge range of findings, chain, beads, and more.  Nearly everything you need to create jewelry.  (Tip:  They’re also on Amazon.com – I usually find what I want on Beadaholique and search for it on Amazon – it simplifies the check-out process if I’m ordering other products, plus there’s that whole cheap/free shipping thing.

3.  Create for Less  This is another great site for basic crafting supplies.  I love that they offer bulk pricing if you are buying a lot of a certain item… also, they offer free shipping on orders of $100 or more.

4.  Etsy I’ve only recently hopped on the Etsy bandwagon for ordering supplies.  They’ve got some great stuff that you can’t necessarily find elsewhere – including vintage materials and bulk quantities of beads – straight from China (and super cheap.)  Top picks include these stone spike beads and all of the tortoise goodness they have going on.

5.  Hobby Lobby I was blown away by how much great stuff Hobby Lobby has on their website.  They’ve become a go to for reasonably priced cords (especially macrame + waxed linen,) and neon goodies.

6.  M&J Trim  M&J will always have a special place in my heart.  For buttons and trim, it’s my go-to.  I’m also a very big fan of this chain – I use it in a lot of my DIY projects.

7.  Online Fabric Store  I was having a hard time finding fabric online that also looks true to color, until I found this site.  They also offer a huge array of faux leather.  (Shipping is free for orders over $50.)

8.  Ornamentea Ornamentea is another great site for basic jewelry making supplies.  They’re my standby for well-priced leather cord in a huge range of colors.  They also have a cute blog with lots of tutorial projects.

9.  Save on Crafts  Although this site’s selection of merchandise is a bit random, the prices are amazing.  Ribbons, paper lanterns, mason jars, feathers, and more…  if you can find what you’re looking for, the price will be right.

10.  Studs and Spikes  While this website is a bit tough to navigate, this is one of my favorite spots.  All the spikes, studs, and (fake) bullets, you could ever ask for!  Their customer service is also really great.

I´m def going to have a look at these online stores although I think shipping to Germany might be quite pricey :( but you should check out some stores on Ebay, e.g. these shops offer such an amazing range of products!
    – Lalang accessory supply http://stores.ebay.de/lalangaccessorysupply
    – shy1028 http://stores.ebay.de/shy1028
    – charmsbracelet http://stores.ebay.de/charmsbracelets
    – gracewolf2008 http://stores.ebay.de/gracewolf2008
    – bead-wholesale http://stores.ebay.de/beadwholesale
    – beadmade http://stores.ebay.de/beadmade
    – for fabric luckyfabrics http://stores.ebay.de/luckyfabrics (beautiful patterns!)
and there are so many more….. :) the only downside is that shipping takes up to 4 weeks but well, it´s incredibly cheap!

and oh my, the buttons from MJ Trim are awesome but VERY expensive

    • Grace Atwood
      graceatwood June 29, 2012 at 2:35 pm #

They are on the expensive side, though so pretty! A few of the other sites I listed (Like Create for Less) have great buttons at much lower prices.

    • Sharon February 5, 2013 at 1:24 am #

We have buttons for even cheaper than MJTRIM or Create for Less!

Cheers, Grace. Thanks for the great resource you have here.

You are welcome, Stacie! I love Hobby Lobby!!!

      • CaioBella July 8, 2014 at 3:58 pm #

Unfortunately, I cannot bring myself to shop at Hobby Lobby anymore now that they do not support women’s rights. If they ever change ownership or start supporting the medical needs of their female employees, I will support them again.

Love this! Thanks for putting it together, Grace! What is your favorite place for finding plastic chains? I’ve been looking all over but can’t find too many options concentrated in one place.

    • Grace Atwood

Thanks Emilee! I’ve found a lot of great plastic chains on Etsy. Go to the supplies section and search for resin chain, lucite chain, or plastic chain and you should get some great results.
